Designer Diary #14 – Watching the Magic Happen (and a Little Tax Drama!)

Hey everyone! Anne here, Sig’s wife and partner-in-crime (especially when it comes to marketing!). It’s been another whirlwind week over here at Sig Trent Games, and I wanted to give you a little peek behind the scenes from my side of things.

This week, Sig has been practically living in the world of Shotgun Fantasy, specifically wrestling with the intricacies of the spell system. It’s fascinating to watch his process. He gets so into the nitty-gritty, figuring out how these magical abilities will work. He’s been particularly excited about this new spell point idea and how it gives players so much more flexibility with their characters. Honestly, sometimes it sounds like he’s speaking a different language when he’s talking about spell ranks and enhancements, but I can see the spark in his eyes when he talks about how it’s all coming together. He’s really trying to create something unique and streamlined compared to the classic D&D spellcasting, and I think he’s onto something really cool.

Beyond the spell design, we also had a great conversation about power creep this week. It’s a constant balancing act when you’re creating a game that you want to keep expanding. Sig is so thoughtful about making sure that new content feels exciting without making older stuff obsolete. It’s a delicate dance, and I admire his dedication to getting it right. Plus, the idea of bringing modern elements into a fantasy setting definitely throws a fun wrench into the power dynamics!

The highlight of my week was Shotgun Fantasy playtesting with our regular D&D group. Our DM, bless his creative soul, let us bring Everyday Heroes characters into his D&D game! It sounds absolutely bonkers, but in the best way possible. I brought an armed operative with a sniper rifle with a half a mile range and was able to take down knights. Sounds kind of broken, but really highlights the unique possibilities of blending these different worlds. It’s all about that “what if?” scenario that gets your imagination going, and it sounds like the playtest really delivered on that front. It’s been so encouraging to hear how much fun everyone’s been having with it. That’s the real win, right? Creating something that people genuinely enjoy and that sparks their creativity.

Also on my end, I’ve been focusing on the less glamorous but equally important stuff – like getting the SEO done on all our videos (including this one!). Hopefully, that helps more people discover all the cool things Sig is working on. It’s all part of getting the word out there!

Oh, and speaking of the less glamorous… we did have a little tax hiccup this week. Let’s just say getting a letter from the IRS is never a fun experience. It was a bit of a headache to sort out, but thankfully, it’s dealt with now. Adulting, am I right?

On a much brighter note, the weather here in Ocean Shores has been absolutely gorgeous! Sunny and breezy – perfect for a walk on the beach. It definitely makes the days a little sweeter, especially when I get a break from the computer.

Overall, it’s been a productive and interesting week. Sig is pouring his heart into Shotgun Fantasy, and it’s exciting to see it develop. Make sure you join our Discord community if you want to chat with Sig and other fans! It’s a great place to get more insights and be part of the conversation.

Thanks for tuning in! Back to the marketing grind for me!

– Anne
