Designer Diary #16 – Teamwork Makes the Dream Work!
Hey everyone! Anne here, Sig’s wife, I wanted to share a little bit about what it’s like from my side of the creative world – especially when it comes to his recent thoughts on teamwork.
You know, living with a game designer means our life often feels like a sprawling RPG campaign. There are quests (deadlines!), boss battles (bug fixes!), and a constant flow of new ideas. But what really resonated with me from Sig’s last video was his focus on collaboration and teamwork. And honestly, it’s not just game design advice; it’s pretty much the secret sauce to our life together.
Our Own “Team-Up” Story
Sig often talks about complementary strengths in a team, and that’s essentially our marriage in a nutshell. He’s the big-picture visionary, the idea-generator who can talk for hours about intricate game mechanics and lore. Me? I’m more about the practical execution and the behind-the-scenes organization.
He’s mentioned how I’m great at the repetitive tasks that bore him, and he’s fantastic at being social – something I’m perfectly happy to let him handle. It’s about recognizing what each person brings to the table and supporting them in their strengths, while subtly covering the areas where they might not shine as brightly. There’s a mutual respect that makes it all work. When he’s deep in writing and that creative energy is flowing, I know when to give him space. And when he needs a sounding board, I’m there to listen and offer my perspective, even if it’s just from the “non-designer” point of view.
The Art of “Slack” (and Not Burning Out)
Sig also talked about “slack” – that essential breathing room in a project. This isn’t just a professional concept for him; it’s something he truly lives by, and it’s something I admire. He strives for excellence in his work, absolutely, but he also prioritizes joy and not burning out. Watching him take breaks for Stellaris (his latest space orc obsession!) or just to relax, isn’t just “playing games” to me. It’s him recharging his creative batteries. It’s part of how he stays passionate and ensures the quality of his work doesn’t suffer from exhaustion. And frankly, it sets a great example for anyone in a high-demand creative field.
Supporting the Vision
It’s truly inspiring to see Sig pour his heart into Shotgun Fantasy. He’s not just building a game; he’s building worlds, stories, and experiences for you all. And when he talks about developing new talent or honoring his allies, that’s just who he is. He genuinely wants to uplift others in the industry and foster a positive community. Being his partner means I get a front-row seat to this passion, and it’s a constant reminder of the dedication and love that goes into every page, every spell, and every creature he designs.
So, next time you’re enjoying a SigTrent Games update or diving into Everyday Heroes, know that there’s a whole lot of creative energy, a little bit of organized chaos, and a whole lot of teamwork (both in the office and at home!) that makes it all happen.
Thanks for letting me share a little bit of our world!
– Anne
