Designer Diary #19 – Getting Unstuck!
Hey everyone, Anne here! You know Sig’s been busy with SigTrent Games, and this week’s YouTube video just dropped, giving you a peek behind the curtain at everything that’s been going on. I wanted to share a bit from my perspective and encourage you to check out the video and join our awesome community!
What’s New with Shotgun Fantasy?
Sig’s been putting in a ton of work on Shotgun Fantasy, and honestly, it’s really starting to take shape! In the video, he shares some new color art sketches for the four core classes – the Fighter, Rogue, Wizard, and Cleric. These aren’t your average fantasy characters; they each have a cool “anachronistic” element, meaning something from a modern world adventure they’ve somehow acquired. We even posted a couple of them in our Discord and asked for your thoughts, which was super fun to see!
He also talks about weaving Isekai/Portal Fantasy elements into Shotgun Fantasy, which is all about characters going to a different world and bringing some of their own world with them. If you’re a Game Master looking for inspiration, he’s got some great ideas on how to tell those kinds of stories.
My Marketing Adventures
You might remember Sig mentioning my own marketing journey. Well, it’s still ongoing! I’m taking a new marketing class that’s giving me a lot more structure than just reading theory, which has been great. We’re still pushing those Hero Sheets and learning a ton, even when things don’t go exactly as planned. Marketing is such a crucial piece of getting a game out there, and we’re definitely taking our baby steps.
And of course, I’m still streaming! If you’re into Myst Universe, I’ve been playing Uru and just moved on to Myst V: End of Ages on Twitch. I’ve been having fun entertaining Myst fans from all over.
Sig’s Top Tips for Getting Unstuck (and Why They Matter!)
Now, for what I think is a super valuable part of this week’s video: Sig’s 10 ways to get unstuck when you’re writing or doing game design. This isn’t just for game designers; honestly, it applies to anyone doing creative work or even just feeling stuck on a problem! He talks about everything from simply talking about your problem (which often helps him untangle his own thoughts) to taking breaks, mind mapping, and even trying out other games.
He really emphasizes the importance of pushing through those moments of “analysis paralysis” or lack of motivation. As someone who sees him working through these things, it’s great to hear him articulate these strategies. My personal favorite tip for him is probably “take a break” – sometimes you just need to step away!
