Designer Diary #23 – Check Lists! and Checking it Twice

Hey everyone! Anne here, Sig’s co-conspirator in all things life and games. Sig just put out his Week 23 update video, and while he covers all the official stuff, I thought I’d give you a little peek behind the curtain from my perspective this week!

It’s been a busy one, as usual. Watching Sig work on Shotgun Fantasy is always interesting. He really grinds it out, especially when he gets into the nitty-gritty like fantasy equipment or trying to figure out how to make those Isekai stories work with game mechanics. It was pretty amusing when he found out “Modern Magic” was taken – we had a good laugh about that. “Night Magic” sounds pretty cool though, definitely fits the vibe he’s going for.

He was also super happy to get Shadow Markets and Debatable Actions up on Sidekick. I know how much effort goes into getting those products finalized and available, so it’s a real win when they go live. He even had me look over the Debatable Actions cards – they really do make that system super smooth to play with.

His game design tip this week about checklists? That’s a big one around here.He talks about how they help him keep his head clear, and honestly, they’re kind of essential for keeping our lives clear sometimes too! When he’s got a big project, you can bet there’s a checklist involved. It’s how he remembers all the little things, which, let’s be honest, can be a lot when you’re managing multiple game projects!

And then there’s the personal stuff. His Baldur’s Gate 3 “one-of-every-class” character is truly something. He seems happy about the unique dialogue options. It’s definitely not the easiest way to play, but that’s Sig for you – always looking for an interesting challenge!

The “gift shop overload” was tough on him, for sure. He really prefers having someone else there, not just for the company, but it helps him stay energized. It threw off his schedule a bit, but he still got so much done. And yes, the haircut! He just grabbed the clippers and went for it. I think he did a pretty good job for a DIY cut, and he’s much happier without his ears being covered. Happy husband, happy life, right? 😉

Anyway, that’s a little glimpse into our week. It’s never dull around here with a game designer in the house! Hope you all have a fantastic week too!
