Designer Diary #26 – Replayability
Hey everyone! With Sig’s weekly update covering some pretty big stuff for SigTrent Games, I figured I’d jump in and share what’s been happening behind the scenes at our little game company.
Shotgun Fantasy: Finally Live!
Okay, so the Shotgun Fantasy playtest going live this week? That’s actually huge for us. I’ve been watching this thing grow from Sig’s random “what if characters could jump between worlds” idea into something people can actually sit down and play. It’s pretty wild seeing all those late-night design conversations turn into real game mechanics.
When Sig asked me to dig up some isekai stories for research, I may have… gone a little overboard. Like, way overboard. I found stuff from ancient myths all the way to modern anime and wrote up synopses for basically everything. Sig keeps saying I “overwrote” the project, but honestly? I think having tons of inspiration is way better than not having enough. Plus, knowing Sig, he’ll probably circle back to half of those examples later anyway.
How We Actually Run This Thing
What I love about SigTrent Games is watching Sig figure out the balance between “cool creative stuff” and “things that actually work for players.” Those equipment packs he’s been working on? Perfect example. Nobody wants to spend forever deciding between four torches or five torches, right? So he makes these little starter packs that just work. Problem solved, game keeps moving.
And yeah, we finally got a mailing list up and running. I know, I know – super exciting stuff. But seriously, for a company that’s basically just us and our Discord community, having a way to actually reach people when we have news is pretty important. Don’t worry though – we’re not going to spam you. We barely have time to send one email a month anyway.
Looking Ahead
The Shotgun Fantasy playtest being live is huge for us. It represents months of work, research, iteration, and probably way too many late-night conversations about magic systems and character balance. If you’re interested in tabletop RPGs, especially if you like the idea of characters hopping between different types of worlds, please check it out. Sig genuinely wants feedback, and this community has always been so supportive.
And that Oracle project he mentioned? I’m curious to see where that goes. Watching him collaborate with Luis on something completely different from his usual work has been fascinating. Sometimes the best ideas come from those “what if we tried…” conversations.
Hope you all have a wonderful week!
